Salt and light are examples of images that Jesus used in the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus taught on morality and discipleship.
We are all called to be examples to the rest of the world….both for other Christians and non Christians.
Both salt and light will change the environment it’s in.
So what is salt used for?
It’s used for seasoning and preserving.
And what is Light used for?
Stimulate sight and make things visible or to make something start burning or igniting.
So as Christians we are to be the salt to preserve the world from destruction and decay. We do this by making deliberate steps to seek to influence the people around us by showing them the unconditional love of Christ.
So to be the salt means to be an influence on others by the example we set in our own personal lives. To be the light means knowing Gods Word and the ability to be able to express it under…. with the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
The light in us will expose the sin in someone else and as the Holy Spirit deals with an individuals heart. It will bring knowledge and awareness to a particular sin in someone’s life that maybe they never even knew was sinful and we (the Light) might never even know the Lord used us to expose it. It’s always between an individual and the Lord.
This is why I used to always tell my kids, my husband and remind myself…. that we might be the only Jesus someone ever sees. Not that we are Jesus…but that they see Jesus (THE LIGHT) in us. This takes constant work on our part!
Sharing with others who Christ really is and that He died for our sins and how He conquered death, hell and the grave and rose again so that we might have eternal life.
God commands us in His Word to GO and TEACH.
MATTHEW 28:19
This means we must be both salt and light at all times.
So what happens if salt is not any good?
When the salt is no longer good then it’s cast aside…. just thrown to the wayside.
Salt must be in balance or it loses its effectiveness and can do damage. Example as in a fire. A little salt can enhance the flame as it burns the sodium and causes the flame to change colors or if you add too much then it can actually put the fire out. It’s all in balance.
Isn’t that just like Christianity? We have to be balanced? We have to be in close communication with the Holy Spirit to know when to speak and move in the Lord’s behalf and when to stand still and be quiet.
When we eat salt it makes us thirsty, right?
So if we are (the salt) then people will become thirsty for what we have and then we can lead them to the FOUNTAIN of living water…the fountain of LIFE!
JOHN 4:14
BUT WHOSOEVER DRINKETH OF THE WATER I SHALL GIVE HIM SHALL NEVER THIRST; BUT THE WATER THAT I SHALL GIVE HIM SHALL BE IN HIM A WELL OF WATER SPRINGING UP INTO EVERLASTING LIFE
If we (the salt) pour on too much… meaning we’ve spoken outside what the Lord wants us to speak (because HE is the ONE that knows the heart of the one speaking and the one hearing) we can actually push someone away from the Lord instead of leading them towards Him.
Our balance is called grace and having a humble heart. Knowing that you are at risk to fall into ANY sins temptation yourself if you don’t keep yourself guarded at all times. Staying in the Word of a God, staying in a constant state of prayer and gathering with other believers.
So we don’t look at someone else and judge…. we look at them with a heart of compassion.
We pray for the person.
We never know what another person has gone through that got them in the place they’re in. All we know is that the devil was able to catch them during a vulnerable moment and messed their lives up and torn homes apart. Which is why… I HATE THE DEVIL!!!!
He’s not our friend! He doesn’t care about us!!! He doesn’t want to give good gifts like our Father in heaven does…. he only wants to destroy us and separate us from God so that we will be bound in sin and cast into hell with him for eternity one day and that day is drawing nearer and nearer.
Always remember that we have a heaven to gain and a hell to shun!!!
The path we choose has eternal consequences. The choice is always ours!
We must be a light that shows Jesus to others at all times. Drawing them to us because they know there’s something different about us and they want to seek out what it is and it’s at this point that God opens up many doors of opportunity to share Him with others.
Salt can be used to as a medicine to cleanse but when it’s applied then it can also sometimes sting.
Trust me… the Lord’s Word often stings me, but when I’ve turned it over to Him then the healing begins.
As Christians we should never try to offend someone with the Word of God but we should also NEVER water it down! We should be led only by the Holy Spirit to speak what He wants when He wants and should always be done with God given Grace.
COLOSSIANS 4:6
But at the same time… when the Lord is prompting us we must also speak with God given boldness and not back down.
ACTS 4:29
EPHESIANS 3:12
Again…it’s all in balance and it takes practice and it takes being fine tuned with the Lord.
Remember that as Christians you will be different. As a matter of fact the Bible actually calls us peculiar people.
1 PETER 2:9
We are different and will be noticed. To some they will be drawn because the Holy Spirit is leading and to others they will be offended not because of us but because of their sin and they know we stand for holiness. Remember they’re under the devils snare. They need prayed for. We are constantly being looked at by others in how we as Christians will act or react. We are responsible for keeping the salt balanced and holding our lamps high to lead them towards Christ.
Our world has become very dark in these last days. It’s time for us as Christians to ban together and let our light shine so that others can see Jesus.
MATTHEW 5:16
who will you be a light to today? Your spouse, children, grandchildren, friends, coworker, or a complete stranger?
I pray you’ll be a light to every person you encounter.
